The Whole of Victorian Government desktop strategy is important to the essential services and a core business requirement in order for all of the Victorian Government departments and agencies to function effectively.
The Whole of Victorian Government proposes the incremental deployment of Thin Clients which will provide the following benefits:
- Lower maintenance requirements (no moving parts to break down);
- High security;
- No virus threats;
- Cost savings and overall lower total cost of ownership;
- Easy administration; and
- Lower power requirements.
What is Thin Client?
Thin client, also called server-based computing, is a “display only” device/terminal. This means it displays applications that run on dedicated servers rather than on the computer. A thin client does not have a hard drive, it needs no software loaded on it locally and it stores no data. Instead, application processing, including web browsing and saving of data occurs on the server while the thin client presents the screen display and gives the user a way to operate the keyboard and mouse.
Thin Clients are very simple devices; you simply plug them in, log on to a server and start working.
The Victorian Government has appointed Blue Connections Pty Ltd and Data #3 as the preferred suppliers to form part of the State Purchase Contract (SPC) panel for the provision of Thin Client hardware devices to all Government Departments, Victoria Police and selected agencies.
The arrangement is for a period of three years with two one year options to extend at the discretion of the Victorian Government.
In line with the VGPB policies, all inner budget departments (including administrative offices) and Victoria Police are mandated to use the Thin Client hardware device SPC. The SPC will also be structured to allow for outer agencies to use the contract.
